How do Teachers Teach English?

Teaching English Literature is about more than just books. It's about helping students understand the language and the ideas and feelings behind the words and how these shape thought and communication. Literature is an art form and teaching literature is about using a range of art based pedagogies to connect students to literature and the many stories and texts that can be taught in a literature class.

One of the most common ways teachers teach this subject is through reading and discussion. Students read a novel, short story, or an article and discuss its meaning, themes, and characters. This activity assists students in working on their comprehension, vocabulary, and ability to articulate an opinion. Teachers frequently pose open ended questions to promote higher order thinking and class engagement.

More writing is an essential part of a literature class. Teachers use assignments that require students to write essays, stories, journals, or speeches. Students learn about structure and variety of sentences, and how to organize ideas. Marking of the writings and the feedback a teacher provides helps students to improve their writing. Other important activities in a literature class are speaking and listening activities.
