All About English Literature

English 9

Students will study notable works during their English 9 course, such as Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare, The Outsiders written by S. E. Hinton, and poetry created by authors including Maya Angelou and Robert Frost. Studying these texts provides students with the opportunity to enhance their skill set in English when they learn about the art of telling stories as well as how to articulate their own thoughts effectively, develop critical thought processes, and develop an appreciation for how language is used to convey meaning and describe our experiences as human beings.

English 11

English 11 will build on everything that you have learned previously in order to help you prepare for higher-level English Classes. In a general sense, you will be studying literature such as poems, novels, short stories and plays. The curriculum will focus on understanding themes and characters as well as the techniques an Author uses. You will connect the literature that you read to the real world. Your writing will play an essential role in this Class. You will write essays and/or creative pieces as well as complete Research Projects; therefore, you will gain the ability to communicate in a clearly structured manner. You will improve your reading, writing and critical thinking skills by the conclusion of this Semester, thus preparing you for your studies in Higher Education and for communicating with others in your everyday life.

English 10

In English 10, we will develop as readers, writers, and thinkers by examining many different kinds of literature including: novels, short stories, plays, poetry, and nonfiction. We will learn how authors utilize the written word to communicate their thoughts and feelings through theme, and learn how to analyze characters through character development and setting as well as symbols through symbolic meaning, while still relating the short story and other works of literature to current events. We will also do a lot of writing: essays, creative writing, reflections, and occasionally research papers. We will receive guidance from our teachers, on how to organize our thoughts and create well-supported arguments, utilize the correct citation and formatting as well as using proper grammar and punctuation. There will also be an emphasis on both listening and speaking. We will participate in discussions during class time, collaborate in small groups, and give class presentations throughout the semester to develop our confidence to share our opinions and beliefs with others.

English 12

In English 12, students will take their last year of high school and begin preparing for life after high school, whether that be through attending a university or finding employment after graduation. Students will be learning advanced skills in the areas of reading comprehension, writing, and critical thinking. Students will read a wide variety of works such as novels, plays, poetry, short stories, and occasionally films in order to gain insight into how authors develop themes, create characters, and use various types of writing techniques. In addition, students will do a good deal of formal writing of essays, literary analysis, and research papers.

Analyzing the work of countless notable writers over the centuries has been the hallmark of our English Literature class. We've read both works that have become staples of Western literature such as Shakespeare as well as contemporary works discussing current events and societal challenges. English Literature affords us the opportunity to explore meaningful literature while enhancing our understanding of ourselves as well as society.

The field of English Literature encompasses a vast array of literature, including but not limited to poetry, drama, short stories, novels, essays, etc... Litterature is not simply "reading" it is the opportunity to explore thinkers' ideas, express their emotions and communicate their messages through the words that they write.

The written word offers us the ability to travel to various times and places. The literature allows you to travel with heroes on their adventures and the everyday struggles of other people. It also informs one about the historical, cultural, and societal views of our world through the lens of a variety of time periods/fashions, and how people relate to one another within that culture/time frame.

So what is English really about at Palmer?

lt involves reading, analyzing, and writing about works of poetry, drama, and prose from different periods and genres to develop critical thinking, creativity, and empathy, as well as to deepen understanding of language, culture, and diverse human experiences. Students study themes, characters, literary techniques, and the historical context of texts to gain insights into different viewpoints and improve their analytical and communication skills.

Studying English helps us build skills we use every day. We can think deeply, ask questions, understanding other perspectives, and expressing our own ideas clearly. It also encourages creativity and helps us connect to what we read in our lives.
