What is English First Peoples?
The English First Peoples course is centered around Indigenous peoples’ viewpoints, as told through their literature, stories, and experiences. This includes literature (including short stories) oral history and spoken word, speeches, etc., written by the First Nations peoples and their storytellers. The main goal of English First Peoples is for students to learn about Indigenous perspectives and cultures. Students are exposed to a variety of literature types and styles, to identify and analyze common themes, and to participate in discussions regarding these topics with peers.

The English First Peoples course will cover themes such as identity, community, history, and relationship to the land. Language is also a significant part of the learning process. Through the English First People’s program, students will learn how language carries traditions, teaches values, and preserves culture. Students will compare and contrast Indigenous texts with other literature forms to gain further understanding of different perspectives.


In summary, the English First Peoples course provides students with opportunities to learn about Indigenous peoples’ experiences and voices through literature and helps them develop respect for other culturesand their histories. The importance of this course cannot be emphasized enough; it fosters awareness and understanding of Indigenous peoples’ histories and perspectives.
