Many different methods of teaching exist to facilitate discussion and reflection on the literature written by Indigenous authors as well as Indigenous culture. Some examples of different methods for teaching this course include reading literature, poems, essays, etc., that have been written by Indigenous authors, having teachers facilitate class discussions and students presenting their own ideas through their journals, PowerPoint presentations, etc. All of these methods allow for student engagement and collaboration.

How English First Peoples is Taught

In summary, the class uses a variety of methods, including reading literature by Indigenous authors, oral storytelling, and class discussions, to assist students in developing their understanding of Indigenous perspectives and their culture. By using these different teaching styles and methods, the students develop an awareness of Indigenous cultures and their perspectives in an educational environment that respects their individuality, promotes critical thinking and encourages learning beyond textbooks.

An integral part of this course is oral storytelling; students can listen to traditional stories through a recording, video, guest speaker, etc. The class values are respect, listening, and discussing thoughts thoughtfully. Students also learn from one another, not only from what they read in the texts, but also based on their collaborative experiences during class discussions, journal entries, and presentations.
